Spot spring wildlife!

Spring is a magical time in Cornwall. As the days grow longer and the landscape bursts back into life, the Camel Estuary and South West Coast Path become one of the best places in North Cornwall to experience wildlife and the beauty of nature.

Spring truly offers something special for every guest staying with us!

Beaches in Cornwall - The Camel Estuary | We Are Cornwall

A living landscape

The Camel Estuary stretches from Padstow inland towards Wadebridge and Bodmin Moor, creating a nature-rich mix of mudflats, saltmarsh, woodland and open water. In spring, this eclectic environment becomes especially active with migrating birds returning, wildflowers blooming and marine life popping into view.

Staying near the estuary gives you the chance to enjoy these moments at a slower pace – early morning walks, quiet afternoons by the water and golden evenings as the sun dips over the river.

Our houses are all dotted along the seven bays, close to the Camel Estuary, with several in Padstow itself, meaning you can experience the beauty of this right on your doorstep.

Birdlife

If you love bird-watching, spring is prime time along the coast path and estuary. Many winter visitors are still lingering, while summer migrant birds begin to arrive, making it one of the best seasons to explore.

Keep an eye out for:

  • Oystercatchers and curlews – easily recognised by their long bills and distinctive calls
  • Shelduck and teal – often seen feeding along the mudflats
  • Sand martins – return in spring and can be seen darting over the water catching insects
  • Little egrets – an increasingly familiar sight patrolling the shallows

Bring a pair of binoculars, take some time to unwind and be patient, and you may be surprised by the plethora of birdlife you can spot! You might even spot a kingfisher…

Seals

One of everyone’s favourite wildlife encounters, grey seals! These curious creatures are often seen bobbing in the water or resting along quieter stretches of the coastline, particularly close to harbours and river mouths. Spring is an excellent time to see them as the water is calmer and boat traffic is still lighter than peak summer months. Seals are naturally curious but we always advise to keep a safe distance and avoid allowing children or dogs to disturb the seals!

Wildflowers & coastal plants

Spring transforms the coast path and estuary banks with colour and life. As you walk, see if you can see:

  • Sea thrift – the iconic pink coastline plant beginning to bloom
  • Cow parsley and wild garlic – brightening hedgerows and woodland edges
  • Daffodils, primroses and bluebells – all are starting to reappear and dot the countryside with colour

These flowers not only add beauty to walks but also attract butterflies and bumble bees!

Otters & other estuary residents

Although far more hard to spot than seals, otters do live along the Camel Estuary and are most likely to be spotted at dawn or dusk. If you’re an early riser, a quiet morning walk could reward you with a glimpse of one slipping into the water on a hunt for breakfast!

You may also see:

  • Herons – standing motionless and elegant at the water’s edge
  • Cormorants – dipping and diving under the water
  • Small fish rippling the water’s surface
